It is not performed if the patient has:
- An existing pregnancy
- Uterine bleeding
- Acute inflammation with severe pain
Preparing for the Procedure
Before the test, patients must:
- Undergo blood tests for infections
- Complete a vaginal swab test for bacterial flora
- Be examined by a gynecologist for any inflammatory diseases
The ultrasound is typically scheduled between days 5 and 10 of the menstrual cycle, when the cervical canal is most open, allowing for easier fluid movement.
How the Procedure Is Performed

- The cervix and vagina are cleaned
- A small catheter with a balloon is inserted into the cervix
- A saline-based contrast fluid is gently introduced into the fallopian tubes
- As the fluid flows, its movement is tracked in real time via ultrasound
- The doctor observes the filling of the tubes, checks for blockages, adhesions, or abnormalities
- In some cases, the pressure of the fluid can clear minor adhesions, increasing the chance of natural conception
If the fluid successfully flows from the uterus through both tubes, patency is confirmed.
