Ultrasound of the cervix
Cervical ultrasound, or cervicometry, is often performed as part of a comprehensive pelvic exam, which includes assessment of the uterus and ovaries. At IPF Clinic, our specialists use high-precision ultrasound technology to evaluate the structure and condition of the cervix, detect abnormalities, and assess blood flow and tissue changes in the reproductive organs.
When Is Cervical Ultrasound Recommended?
Cervicometry is commonly prescribed in cases such as:
- Bleeding during or after intercourse
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Routine monitoring during pregnancy
- Lower abdominal pain
- Infertility investigations
- Swelling in the legs
- Irregular menstrual cycles
- Urinary difficulties
During the scan, doctors pay special attention to:
- Structural abnormalities of the cervix
- Deformations or scarring
- Presence and spread of tumors or polyps
- Signs of cervical insufficiency during pregnancy
Importance During Pregnancy
In pregnant women, cervical ultrasound is essential for measuring cervical length. A short cervix may indicate a risk of preterm birth or miscarriage due to cervical incompetence. Early detection allows for timely intervention and prevention.

Preparing for Cervical Ultrasound
Preparation depends on the type of procedure:
Transvaginal Ultrasound:
- No special preparation required
- To enhance image clarity, avoid gas-producing foods the day before
- Drink 1 liter of water an hour before your appointment to fill the bladder
- During pregnancy, no preparation is needed, as amniotic fluid provides adequate visibility
Transrectal Ultrasound:
- Performed only after a cleansing enema, 6–8 hours before the exam
How the Exam Is Performed
Transvaginal Method:
- You’ll lie on your back with knees bent
- A covered and lubricated ultrasound probe is gently inserted into the vagina
- You may feel mild pressure, but it is not painful
Transabdominal Method:
- You'll lie flat and expose your abdomen
- The doctor applies gel and uses an abdominal probe to examine the pelvic area
Transrectal Method:
- You’ll lie on your side with knees drawn up
- The probe is inserted into the rectum
- You may feel discomfort, but not pain
After any of these procedures, your specialist will provide a report, and your doctor will review the results and determine the next steps in your care.
