Ultrasound prostate
Prostate ultrasound (TRUS – transrectal ultrasound) is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure used to evaluate the condition of the prostate and its surrounding tissues. At IPF Clinic, the scan is performed using a special ultrasound probe inserted into the rectum, providing detailed and accurate images of the prostate.
In some cases, the doctor may also perform a digital rectal exam (DRE) or take a biopsy, but TRUS remains the primary method for initial prostate screening.
Why Is Prostate Ultrasound Done?
Your doctor may recommend a prostate ultrasound if you have:
- Prostate enlargement
- Suspected tumors or nodules
- Male infertility
- Elevated PSA levels in a blood test
- Difficulty or pain while urinating
- Other urinary or reproductive health concerns

TRUS helps in:
- Detecting inflammation, cysts, tumors
- Measuring prostate size and volume
- Guiding biopsies or minimally invasive procedures
Benefits of TRUS (Prostate Ultrasound)
- One of the most accessible and cost-effective diagnostic tools
- No radiation exposure
- Excellent imaging of soft tissues, unlike X-rays
- Safe and painless, can be performed multiple times
- Ideal for real-time guidance during needle biopsy or aspiration
- No side effects – widely praised by both doctors and patients
How the Procedure Is Done
- You’ll lie on your side with your knees pulled slightly toward your chest
- The doctor will gently insert a small ultrasound probe into the rectum
- If an abnormal area is found, a biopsy needle may be used to collect tissue for analysis (done under real-time ultrasound guidance)
- The entire scan takes around 15–20 minutes
- You will receive a full report immediately after the exam
Preparation for Prostate Ultrasound
In most cases, no special preparation is needed. However, if a biopsy is also planned:
- Stop taking blood-thinning medications (e.g., aspirin) 7–10 days before the exam (consult your doctor first)
- Perform a cleansing enema 2–4 hours before the procedure
- Wear comfortable clothing, or you may be given a medical gown for convenience
