Ultrasound gallbladder
Gallbladder ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure used to detect functional and structural disorders of the gallbladder. At IPF Clinic, our specialists rely on the results of this examination to accurately diagnose and determine the most effective treatment plan for each patient.
Unlike some other ultrasounds, this exam requires specific preparation to ensure accurate and reliable imaging. Proper preparation helps identify a wide range of conditions, including:
- Acute cholecystitis (pain during probe movement, thickened or swollen walls, fluid accumulation)
- Gallstones (cholelithiasis) (visible stones with acoustic shadowing)
- Gallbladder hydrops (enlargement due to obstruction by stones)
- Cholangitis (presence of air in the bile ducts, wall thickening, abscesses, duct dilation)
- Choledocholithiasis (common bile duct >7 mm with visible stones)
How to Prepare for a Gallbladder Ultrasound

Proper preparation is essential to ensure clear imaging and accurate diagnosis.
Key Guidelines:
- 8 hours before the exam – no food intake
- 7 days before – avoid fatty foods and alcohol
- Eliminate gas-producing foods such as:
- Rye bread
- Beans and legumes
- Raw fruits and vegetables
- Cabbage
- Carbonated drinks
- Whole milk
- Processed snacks
3 Days Before the Exam:
- Your doctor may recommend taking enzyme supplements with meals (up to 3 times a day – dosage prescribed individually)
- You may also be advised to take anti-gas medications
The Day Before:
- Eat a light dinner before 7:00 PM
- No enema is required, but it’s important to empty the bowels – laxatives or bowel-regulating medications may be used
On the Day of the Exam:
- If the ultrasound is scheduled for the morning, do not eat or drink beforehand
- If the exam is scheduled for the afternoon, you may have a light breakfast, as instructed by your doctor
What to Expect During the Procedure
You’ll lie on your back while the specialist applies ultrasound gel to your abdomen.
Using gentle pressure with the ultrasound probe, the doctor will examine your gallbladder and surrounding organs.
The exam is painless and typically takes only a few minutes. Afterward, you’ll receive a detailed medical report for follow-up with your physician.
