Ultrasound of the bladder
Bladder ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure performed at IPF Clinic using ultrasound technology to identify various urinary tract conditions. The results are used by doctors to recommend effective, individualized treatment.
Unlike some other types of ultrasound, this procedure requires specific preparation and is typically prescribed in cases involving:
- Difficulty urinating
- Frequent urges to urinate
- Suspected bladder stones
- Signs of vesicoureteral reflux
- Blood in urine
- Pain in the lower abdominal area
In addition to these symptoms, ultrasound may be prescribed for patients diagnosed with chronic cystitis or pyelonephritis. Male patients may undergo a simultaneous prostate exam (for detecting adenomas or inflammation), and for women, an evaluation of reproductive organs may also be conducted if necessary.

Why Is Bladder Ultrasound Important?
Ultrasound allows for early detection of potential conditions and helps prevent serious complications. It is often used as a preventive screening tool as well.
Bladder ultrasound helps detect:
- Structural abnormalities
- Inflammatory changes
- Stones or tumors
- Bladder wall damage
- Fluid content abnormalities (such as pus in the urine)
How to Prepare for a Bladder Ultrasound
Preparation is simple but essential for accurate results:
- Drink 2 liters of fluid (water, tea, juice, or compote — non-carbonated) 1.5 to 2 hours before the procedure.
- The goal is to fill the bladder, which enhances image clarity and diagnostic precision.
- Alternatively, a physiological method can be used: refrain from urinating for 5–6 hours before the test.
For Transrectal Exams (Prostate & Bladder in Men)
- Follow the same fluid intake steps
- Additionally, administer a cleansing enema a few hours before the exam
How the Procedure Works
When you arrive:
- You’ll lie on your back in the ultrasound room
- The specialist will examine your bladder and assess key parameters such as:
- Shape (can become asymmetrical with disease)
- Size (small with fibrosis or cystitis; enlarged with stones or adenomas)
- Wall contours
- Trauma or lesions
- Tumors
- Contents (e.g. urine, pus)
After the scan, the specialist will provide a detailed report, which your doctor will use to make an accurate diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment.
