Thyroid ultrasound
Thyroid ultrasound is a simple, non-invasive diagnostic procedure used to evaluate the condition of the thyroid gland. It is quick, accessible to all patients, and requires no special preparation.
At IPF Clinic, the exam is performed using high-precision ultrasound equipment, and the results are provided immediately after the scan. These results help your physician prescribe effective treatment to improve your well-being or manage thyroid-related conditions.
When Should You Get a Thyroid Ultrasound?
Thyroid ultrasound is recommended when a patient presents with certain symptoms or when there is suspicion of thyroid disorders. Common reasons include:
- Tremors in the hands or limbs
- Suspicion of thyroid tumors or nodules
- Palpable lumps or swelling in the neck
- Frequent mood swings or irritability
- Nervousness or anxiety
- Irregular heart rhythm
- Unexplained weight changes
- Hair loss
- And other symptoms
Thyroid ultrasound is also widely used for preventive and routine checkups.
Specialists recommend performing a thyroid ultrasound once a year to detect any changes early and avoid complications.

What Does the Scan Show?
Ultrasound helps detect:
- Diffuse or nodular changes in the thyroid
- Size, shape, and volume of the thyroid gland
- The structure of the thyroid lobes and isthmus
- Abnormalities like cysts, nodules, or goiter
Ultrasound is also used during fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy, allowing the doctor to guide the needle with precision in real-time.
Important to Know
While thyroid ultrasound provides essential data (such as size, mass, and structural changes), it does not replace a medical diagnosis.
Only an endocrinologist can interpret the results in the context of your overall health and may order additional testsbefore making a final diagnosis or treatment plan.
Preparing for a Thyroid Ultrasound
No special preparation is required for a thyroid ultrasound.
You may want to bring a small towel to place under your neck for comfort and to help wipe off the ultrasound gel afterward.
For older patients, we recommend having the procedure on an empty stomach to avoid the risk of a gag reflex when light pressure is applied to the neck with the ultrasound probe.
That’s all you need to do to get ready.
How the Procedure Works
- The entire scan takes just over 10 minutes
- You'll lie comfortably on your back
- The doctor will apply a small amount of gel to your neck and gently move the probe across the area
- As the scan is performed, an image of your thyroid appears on the screen, showing its size, volume, and any nodules or abnormalities
- After the exam, you’ll receive a detailed report with any findings
