Ultrasonography of the abdomen
Abdominal ultrasound is a non-invasive examination that uses high-frequency sound waves to assess the health of internal organs. At IPF Clinic, we use advanced ultrasound technology to examine the:
- Gallbladder
- Liver
- Blood vessels
- Spleen
- Pancreas
- Retroperitoneal space
The procedure is completely safe, painless, and performed by experienced specialists. It provides quick and accurate results, making it a popular choice for both diagnostic and preventive care.
When Is Abdominal Ultrasound Recommended?
This type of ultrasound is typically prescribed when patients experience:
- A feeling of heaviness in the stomach or upper right abdomen
- Abdominal pain
- A bitter taste in the mouth
- Sharp pain in the lower abdomen
- Excessive gas or bloating
It is also used to investigate or monitor suspected acute or chronic inflammatory diseases, such as:
- Cirrhosis
- Pancreatitis
- Tumors
- Cholecystitis
- Hepatitis
During the scan, the spleen is carefully examined to assess its density, size, and any signs of disease. The exam may also detect cysts, hemangiomas, calcifications, and tumors.

Other Uses for Abdominal Ultrasound:
- Assisting with biopsy guidance
- Confirming diagnoses such as ascites or preparing for paracentesis
- Pre-surgical assessment before abdominal operations
Routine or preventive ultrasound screening increases the chances of early diagnosis and successful treatment.
Abdominal Ultrasound During Pregnancy
Pregnant patients may undergo abdominal ultrasound to evaluate symptoms like:
- Abdominal pain
- Severe nausea or vomiting (toxicosis)
- Organ dysfunction
The scan is safe for both mother and baby. Ideally, it should be performed before 16 weeks of pregnancy, as the growing uterus may later obscure the view. The exam can include the liver, spleen, gallbladder, and kidneys.
How the Procedure Works
The ultrasound machine sends high-frequency sound waves that create 2D or 3D images of your abdominal organs.
Doctors evaluate:
- Organ size, position, and integrity
- Gallstones or structural abnormalities
- Evidence of inflammation, tumors, or cysts
- Vascular health and stomach wall condition
How to Prepare for Abdominal Ultrasound
Proper preparation is key to obtaining clear and accurate results:
- Begin preparation 3 days in advance by following a low-fiber, low-gas diet
- Avoid: raw vegetables, legumes, rye bread, fatty or sugary foods
- No food is allowed on the day of the exam
Avoid the scan if you recently had:
- Barium X-ray, gastroscopy, or colonoscopy
Can You Drink Water Before the Exam?
- Yes, but only if kidneys are being examined. A full bladder improves visualization.
- Avoid drinking carbonated beverages or other gas-producing liquids.
Gas accumulation can reduce image quality, as ultrasound waves cannot penetrate deeply through gas.
