Pregnancy Planning and Preconception Care
Pregnancy planning, also known as preconception care, is the process of preparing a couple for conception and the healthy birth of a child. A baby’s health depends directly on the health of both parents.
When future parents make the conscious decision to grow their family, one of the best first steps is a comprehensive medical check-up for both partners. This allows for early detection and treatment of any conditions that could affect conception, pregnancy, or the well-being of the mother and baby.
Although pregnancy is not an illness, it places significant demands on the woman’s body. Every system must work at full capacity — so if there are any pre-existing chronic conditions, they could worsen under this strain.
That’s why it’s essential to consult an obstetrician-gynecologist at least 2–3 months before trying to conceive. If needed, your doctor may also refer you to other specialists — such as a nephrologist, neurologist, or ophthalmologist.
It is always easier to prevent a condition than to treat it — especially during pregnancy, when many medications are restricted.
Why Preconception Testing Matters
A crucial part of pregnancy planning is screening for TORCH infections, which can affect pregnancy and fetal development.
TORCH stands for:
- T – Toxoplasmosis
- O – Other infections (such as chlamydia)
- R – Rubella (German measles)
- C – Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
- H – Herpes simplex virus (HSV)
A blood test will check whether the woman has antibodies (immunity) to these infections. Primary infection during pregnancy, if no prior immunity exists, poses serious risks to the baby.
If there is no immunity to rubella, vaccination can be done six months before planned pregnancy.
It's also vital to test for hepatitis B and C, HIV, and syphilis, as these infections often show no symptoms but can affect pregnancy and the baby.
Folic Acid and Lifestyle Preparation
Start taking folic acid (400 mcg daily) at least three months before conception to help prevent neural tube defects in the baby.
