ICSI
ICSI (Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection) - ICSI, injection of a spermatozoon into the cytoplasm of the oocyte, is one of the methods of assisted reproductive technology.
What is the ICSI method?
During the IVF procedure, sperm and ovums are combined in the same container and fertilization occurs “independently” in a natural way, but in order to perform the ICSI procedure, only one morphologically normal, viable spermatozoon and the sperm penetration procedure is performed“artificially” under a microscope . An embryologist selects one spermatozoon and injects it into the ovum using microtools. In this way, all oocytes obtained during puncture are fertilized.
The procedure itself is a complex process that requires the precise work of a doctor. The manipulation is performed under a fourfold magnification using a high-precision micromanipulation system.
Indications for fertilization with ICSI method:
- Oligozoospermia, asthenozoospermia, teratozoospermia;
- Usage of sperm obtained by biopsy or puncture (testicle or epididymis);
- Usage of cryopreserved sperm;
- Usage of blue-preserved oocytes;
- Patient age;
- Absence or low incidence of fertilization in previous IVF cycles;
- Failed repeated IVF attempts;
- Reinsemination of oocytes on the second day in previous cycles;
- The necessity of pre-implantation genetic diagnosis;
- Clinically proven antisperm antibodies in the ejaculate;
- Ideopathic infertility (of unknown origin);
- Morphological anomalies of oocytes;
- Ejaculatory disorders (retrograde ejaculation, unejaculation, etc.).
Contraindications for this procedure:
- Somatic and mental illness;
- Uterus body length less than 35 mm;
- Acute inflammatory diseases of any localization;
- Congenital malformations and acquired deformities of the uterus, in which the implantation of the embryo and the carrying of pregnancy is impossible;
- Benign growths that deform the uterine cavity and require surgical treatment;
- Malignant neoplasms of any localization (it is allowed to get cells to preserve reproductive potential).
The positive result of the method is the presence of fertilization.
The ICSI method makes it possible to have children, even for those couples whose sperm quality was not sufficient for conducting classical IVF.
