Screening (genetic ultrasound)

Do You Need to Prepare for an Ultrasound Screening?

No special preparation is required for ultrasound (US) screening.
The only recommendation is to empty your bladder before the procedure. This allows the specialist to get a clearer view of the cervical canal and assess the tone of the uterus, leading to more accurate and reliable results.

How Often Is Ultrasound Screening Done?

In a typical pregnancy, three scheduled ultrasound screenings are performed. However, your doctor may recommend additional scans if needed. This is no cause for concern — additional exams are affordable and aimed at detecting or ruling out any possible complications.

Recommended Timeline for Ultrasound Screenings:

  1. First Trimester Scan — between 11 weeks + 1 day and 13 weeks + 6 days
  2. Second Trimester Scan — between 18 weeks and 20 weeks + 6 days
  3. Third Trimester Scan with Doppler — between 22 weeks and 41 weeks

Each of these screenings plays an essential role in monitoring fetal development and identifying potential concerns early.

Why Is Ultrasound Screening Important at Every Stage?

At each stage of pregnancy, ultrasound screening provides valuable insights:

  • First trimester: Early detection of chromosomal markers and fetal anomalies
  • Second trimester: Detailed anatomical survey of all major organs and systems
  • Third trimester with Doppler: Assessment of blood flow, placental function, and fetal well-being

By following the recommended screening schedule, you help ensure a healthy pregnancy and timely medical supportwhen needed.

First Screening: Weeks 10–12

The first prenatal screening confirms the viability of the pregnancy. During this scan, specialists determine:

  • Gestational age
  • Fetal heartbeat
  • Estimated due date

However, the most critical part of this screening is the detection of chromosomal abnormality markers, particularly the nuchal translucency measurement.
If this space is enlarged or if the nasal bone is not visible, the risk of chromosomal disorders increases significantly — including conditions like Down syndrome or other genetic abnormalities.

Second Screening: Weeks 20–24

This scan focuses on identifying fetal anomalies and potential complications in more detail. At this stage, specialists can more confidently assess genetic risks linked to chromosomal abnormalities.

For women over the age of 35, we recommend undergoing a genetic ultrasound around 18–19 weeks, as early detection before the 20th week allows for a broader range of safe and timely options.

Third Screening: Weeks 32–34

The final major ultrasound screening evaluates:

  • Fetal development and body proportions
  • Placental health and amniotic fluid levels
  • Signs of oxygen deficiency in the fetus

This scan also helps identify late-developing conditions, especially those resulting from maternal infections earlier in pregnancy.

Is Ultrasound Screening Safe?

Yes. Despite persistent myths, ultrasound is completely safe for both mother and baby.
Genetic screening ultrasound is essentially a detailed diagnostic scan, aimed at identifying a range of possible abnormalities — not just one specific condition. It is recommended for women of all ages and health profiles.
