Ultrasound of the pancreas
Pancreatic ultrasound is one of the most reliable diagnostic methods available today to assess the condition of the pancreas. At IPF Clinic, our specialists use advanced ultrasound technology both for early diagnosis and preventive care.
Since pancreatic dysfunction often affects overall digestion and other abdominal organs, ultrasound is a key tool in identifying the underlying cause of symptoms.
When Is a Pancreas Ultrasound Recommended?
Doctors may recommend a pancreatic ultrasound for patients experiencing:
- Chronic or sharp pain in the upper abdomen or left side
- Pain under the breastbone ("in the pit of the stomach")
- Abnormalities found during gastroscopy
- Pain during physical examination or palpation
- Suspected chronic pancreatitis
- Unexplained weight loss
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin/eyes)
- History of abdominal trauma
- Pre-surgical assessments
- Frequent digestive disturbances or diarrhea
- And other symptoms

What Can Pancreatic Ultrasound Detect?
- Inflammation — seen as changes in glandular structure
- Complications of pancreatitis — necrotic areas, abscesses, or cysts
- Abscesses — fluid-filled cavities with debris
- Pancreonecrosis — areas with multiple abscesses in gland tissue
- Tumor-like masses — rounded or oval lesions with active blood flow
- Pseudocysts — visible as fluid-filled cavities on the monitor
Early detection allows for treatment before complications develop, significantly improving outcomes.
How to Prepare for a Pancreas Ultrasound
Proper preparation ensures accurate imaging and diagnosis:
- 3 days before the scan:
- Avoid raw fruits and vegetables, dairy, and any food that increases gas
- Follow a low-residue diet
- 12 hours before the procedure:
- No food intake (overnight fasting required)
- Do not smoke, drink alcohol, or take medications unless prescribed
- If you experience bloating, take activated charcoal or other anti-gas medications as recommended
On the day of the scan:
- You will lie on your back, then turn to each side as needed
- The doctor will apply gel to your abdomen and use a probe to view the pancreas
- The scan is painless and takes a little over 10 minutes
