Pelvic ultrasound
When it comes to accuracy and safety, few diagnostic methods compare to ultrasound imaging. It allows specialists to detect early signs of pathology and abnormalities in organ function — especially in the pelvic region.
At IPF Clinic, we offer pelvic ultrasound exams using state-of-the-art equipment, allowing for highly detailed, real-time imaging of:
- The female reproductive system
- Kidneys and bile ducts
- The prostate gland
- The bladder
- The rectum
- The hip joints
Pelvic Ultrasound for Women
A common reason for pelvic ultrasound in women is gynecological assessment. In a single session, we can examine the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes.
Typical indications include:
- Lower abdominal pain
- Irregular menstruation
- Unusual discharge or bleeding
- Suspected pregnancy (first-trimester confirmation and routine prenatal care throughout each trimester)
Ovarian ultrasound is particularly effective in diagnosing conditions such as inflammation, polycystic ovaries, and ovarian cysts. Monitoring ovarian size and structure throughout the menstrual cycle also helps personalize fertility treatment plans.
Pelvic Ultrasound for Men
In men, ultrasound may be used to diagnose:
- Prostatitis and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
- Disorders of the seminal vesicles
- Inflammation of the testicular veins and epididymis
Symptoms like groin pain, urination problems, or infertility may prompt a pelvic ultrasound.
Hip Joint Ultrasound
Ultrasound of the hip joints can assist in diagnosing:
- Arthritis and arthrosis
- Inflammation of bones or cartilage
It is often prescribed as a supplemental imaging method for musculoskeletal evaluation.
How to Prepare for Pelvic Ultrasound
Preparation depends on the type of ultrasound:
- Transvaginal (through the vagina):
No special preparation is needed. - Transrectal (through the rectum):
A full bladder and empty bowel are required. A cleansing enema may be recommended. - Transabdominal (across the abdomen):
Preparation involves:- Avoiding gas-producing foods for 2 days prior
- Using laxatives 2–3 hours before the exam
- Drinking enough water to fill the bladder 30 minutes before the procedure
- Obstetric ultrasound (for pregnancy): ideally done on an empty stomach

How the Procedure Works
- For transvaginal or transrectal exams, the doctor uses a slim internal probe covered with a sterile condom and ultrasound gel for hygiene and clarity.
- For abdominal ultrasounds, you will expose your lower abdomen while the doctor uses a gel-coated probe on your skin to capture images.
In all cases, the exam is painless, and results appear in real time on the monitor.
