Ultrasound during pregnancy
Pregnancy is a deeply emotional and transformative time in a woman’s life, marked by the mysterious and miraculous development of new life within her. To ensure a healthy pregnancy, consistent monitoring and timely examinations by medical professionals are essential. One of the most important diagnostic tools during pregnancy is ultrasound, which allows doctors to monitor fetal development and assess the baby’s health before birth.
Ultrasound services for expectant mothers are widely available at women’s health clinics and maternity centers throughout Kyiv, including at IPF Clinic.
When to Have an Ultrasound During Pregnancy
Many women seek their first ultrasound as soon as they suspect they are pregnant — often after a missed period and a positive pregnancy test. A transvaginal ultrasound can confirm pregnancy as early as two weeks after a missed period.
However, standard prenatal ultrasound monitoring includes three scheduled scans during different stages of pregnancy:
- 1st Trimester (Week 10–14):
This first scan helps determine the estimated due date, confirm the number of embryos, screen for chromosomal abnormalities, detect possible ectopic pregnancy, and assess the tone of the uterus. The gestational age can be determined with an accuracy of ±3 days. - 2nd Trimester (Week 19–23):
This scan assesses fetal anatomy, placental health, and can often reveal the baby’s gender. Photos and videos may be provided. The maturity of the placenta is also evaluated, which is crucial for the normal course of pregnancy. - 3rd Trimester (Weeks 28–36):
The third scan is used to assess fetal position (important for delivery planning), check for umbilical cord entanglement, and detect any anomalies not previously identified.
How Often Should You Get an Ultrasound During Pregnancy?
The number of ultrasounds required is based on the specific medical condition of the pregnant woman. In high-risk pregnancies, up to 10 ultrasound scans may be needed. Sometimes expectant mothers are hesitant due to concerns about the cost or safety of frequent scans, but these concerns are largely based on outdated misconceptions.
Is Ultrasound Safe During Pregnancy?
Despite common myths, ultrasound is completely safe when performed by trained specialists using modern equipment:
- Myth: Ultrasound can cause genetic mutations in early pregnancy.
Fact: Ultrasound uses sound waves, not harmful radiation like X-rays. It has been thoroughly studied and proven to be safe for both mother and baby. - Myth: The baby becomes agitated during the scan, so it must be harmful.
Fact: Any fetal activity during an ultrasound is normal. If the mother is anxious, her stress hormones — not the scan — may influence fetal movement.
Scientific research and decades of experience confirm the safety of prenatal ultrasound. The benefits, especially early detection of potential complications, far outweigh any imagined risks. Visual insights provided by ultrasound are often key to ensuring healthy labor and delivery.
